Encouraged and heartened by the readiness of TEI-L readers to re-engage
vigorously with old debates, I would like now to put up for your
consideration a completely different question.
How should "floating texts" be handled?
Julia Flanders has already provided an excellent summary of what
characterizes a floating text ( see
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1308688&group_id=106328&atid=644065)
so I won't repeat that here.
The TEI offers, at present, two elements <text> and <quote> which might
be used to handle these phenomena, possibly with some tweaking of their
content models or class memberships. Do we need a third? If we do, how
does it differ from the other two and how should it be defined?
Again, the reason for asking is to help move forward on TEI P5. I have
an answer to the question in mind (did you doubt it?) but I would like
to hear what *you* think first!
(Not that I'm trying to stop further discussion about abbreviations of
course)
