The 6th Quadrennial Conference of the International Geoscience Education
Organisation (IGEO) will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand
in Johannesburg, South Africa 30 August to 3 September 2010!

The theme of the conference will be "Geoscience Education - Developing
the World."

If you are an Earth science educator of any form, this is an outstanding
opportunity to meet with leaders in geoscience education from across the
world, while visiting one of the world's most fascinating and
geologically significant regions. If you've ever considered visiting
South Africa, this is the time to go!

The official website --
http://web.wits.ac.za/NewsRoom/Conferences/GeoSciEd -- has details of
the meeting, including topics of concentration during the conference, a
general schedule, information about the field trip, and information
about traveling to the conference. Registration for the conference
hasn't opened yet, but will be possible at the website. In the meantime,
if you have questions about the conference, you may address them to
[log in to unmask] Or you may contact the organizers at the
University of the Witwatersrand, Dr. Ian McKay
([log in to unmask]) and Professor Gillian Drennan
([log in to unmask]), School of Geosciences, University of the
Witwatersrand, Private Bag X3, Wits 2050, South Africa.

During the five day conference there will be four days of presentations,
with three sessions and a workshop running concurrently each day, plus
one all day field trip for all attendees. There will also be a variety
of optional one-day, two-day, and six-day field trips before and after
the conference. The six day field trips include one to Cape Town and
Kwa-Zulu Natal before the meeting, and one to Mpumulanga after the meeting.

The aims of the International Geoscience Education Organisation are to
promote geoscience education internationally at all levels, to work for
enhancement of the quality of geoscience education internationally, and
to encourage developments raising public awareness of geoscience,
particularly amongst younger people. You can learn more about the IGEO
at the organization website, http://geoscied.org/index.htm. The IGEO is
affiliated to and sponsored by the International Union of Geological
Sciences (IUGS).
