Hello. This is the first message I am sending to this list, although I have
been reading yours for a little time now. (Now that summer is coming I hope
to have more time to write more messages to the mailing lists I am
subscribed to.) The purpose of this message is to let you know a little
about
me before I start participating at this list.

I am an eighteen-year-old (born in 1982) Spanish boy living in a city called
Valladolid. My name is "Rodrigo" (it is "Roderick" in English, "Rodericus"
in Latin, I think it is "Rodrigue" in French, etc., etc.). I just love
anything concerning language(s), and that makes me read about different
languages and so I have many ideas of different languages (and I'm able to
understand those similar to Spanish -- Italian, Galician, Portuguese, ....)
but I am not able to speak so many ones... I hope to study Classical
Philology at University next year.

My grandfather was an Esperantist. This way, I knew about that language some
years ago (I think I was about 12 or 13 years old when I first heard about
Esperanto). I liked it so much that, when we were told at school to do some
research (you call it a paper in English, don't you? we call it "trabajo"
(=work) in Spanish) on whatever subject we wanted, I chose Esperanto. We had
to write about it and speek to the class. As far as I can remember, most
people were given back what they had done and only some people (including
me), who were considered to have done really good things :-), didn't receive
it (it remained at school).

A little time ago, I started using the Internet. One day I was reading the
messages at babylon.com forums and found one with a subject like "The
Universal Language", "International Auxiliary Languages" or something
similar. I think I had read something about constructed other than Esperanto
somewhere, but I knew only that conlang. I can't remember what I wrote
there, but I think it was something about Esperanto and I think I also wrote
I had heard something about a simplified Latin, and things like that. Some
days later I received an e-mail from Ingvar Stenström (thank you very much,
Ingvar, if you are at this list) telling me about Interlingua. I started
then browsing some web pages on Interlingua, until I finally subscribed to
the INTERLNG mailing list. Some time later I started hearing about other
conlangs (Occidental, Glosa, Lojban, Speedwords, Latino sine Flexione,...).
I've printed a lot of pages on conlangs (to read them later).

I am now subscribed to several mailing lists about/in those conlangs:
INTERLNG, interlingua-coollist, romanica (@[log in to unmask]) and the other
lists on ILR, 2 lists about/in occidental (interlingue e occidental),
langmaker, [log in to unmask], uusisuom_language
(yahoogroups.com), interlingua-espaniol (not a lot of messages for the
moment :-) ), and bablo (what's the matter with it? I've received no message
from it since I subscribed).

I just want to say that, as you can see, I'm truly interested in more than
just one conlang. I respect all languages and linguistic projects and I just
can't say I think one of them is objectively the best auxiliary language. In
spite of that, I think Interlingua is the most international and easily
understandable conlang I have seen until now. That doesn't mean I think
Interlingua is perfect, but that, in my opinion (or at least for now), it is
the easiest and most international linguistic system of those that I know.
But I don't believe in the objective and absolute easiness (or
internationality or whatever) of any language (be it
"artificial"/"constructed" or "natural", although I think all languages are
actually artificial, aren't they?).

So don't think of me as a fanatic of any certain language, please. (I don't
think it's so different from racism or religious fanaticism)

Well, that's all for now.
