Clyde Curley and I are working on a third Portland Collection fiddle tune book. We are well underway, in fact and have recently mailed out requests for permission to print tunes to around 80 composers. However, there are several we are unable to locate, having exhausted our usual sources and resources. If anyone here can put me in touch with any of the following composers or their estates (several are deceased), please write to me off list with that information (songer at portcoll dot com). If you know someone who might know how to find these people, that is also [...]

Hmm... now I know where this tuning came from. The Crimean Tatars!

Not that Crimean Tatar traditional music is all that easy to come by, but there is a dance, Tym-tym, which is accompanied by a tune in this tuning. Examples are numerous, e.g.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeUsz1PKRWc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl8grqobrJ4

Don't know if there might be any connection to other tunes in this tuning, but it's interesting nevertheless.
Wow, that should be great fun. I wish I could be there! Maybe another year, if it becomes a tradition.

Dave Barton

BTW, Deborah, the first time I saw your name on a notice of the tunesmithing contest, I realized it was famiar. Later, it hit me. I played violin in Pat Isham's string ensemble here in San Jose for many years. And we played some of your arrangements for string orchestra. One, a medley of Irish reels, worked very well; our audience loved it. [...]

Jacques: it looks like Jenny Gall lives in Canberra. That should
narrow it down a bit. I found that out here:
http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Events_Calendar/Irish_Fiddle_Camp

Maybe you can write to the sponsors of that camp and have them fwd
your email to her.

Graham McDonald is a musician and instrument maker near Canberra. If
you are anywhere near there he may be able to find some folks or know
of other trad musicians. He has a whole section on his site about
Australian dance music: http://www.mcdonaldstrings.com [...]
