A catastrophic earthquake hit the India/Pakistan region of Kashmir on Oct. 8th, utterly devastating the area and its inhabitants. As of now, 78,000 people have been reported dead and millions are homeless. Many survivors continue to be stranded in inaccessible mountain areas - hungry, thirsty and cold - with no shelter, and insufficient clothes and bedding in torrential rain and hail. Given the extremities of the weather and the lack of international support, an even greater surge of deaths is predicted. Furthermore, family - as we know it- no longer exists for many people: nursing infants lack mothers, and parents have lost children. |
