OK, this is a good clue to get me oriented.

I had no idea about this. I have been mucking around all this time in .el
files all over the place, and was wondering why my tei-emac-init files
turned into a mess. I suspect it might be a good idea to reinstall the
whole thing at this point. Would I be asking too much for a hint as to
how the recompile process works?

At the very least, you have prevented me from causing a wad of new problems.
