I think the fact that they chose so many old songs is
the reason for the qualitative difference between the
vocals at the Creatures shows a couple years back and
the Itch shos last year. From what I've heard, the
first couple shows of the Itch tour were MUCH better
than the West Coast/Europe shows. This might point to
Sioux's historically known vocal fatigue , combined
with the fact that her voice has become very obviously
deeper over the years. The choice of older songs for
the Itch sets only emphasised this change, since she
was still trying very unsuccessfully to sing at a
pitch she hasn't really used for a decade or so.
But I think Sioux was never the strongest live singer,
and this has become more true as the years have gone
by - her initial punk screaming worked, but as her
voice has worn and deepened, the screaming has been
less interesting and more like moaning. Her studio
work always sounds fine, but that's more because in
teh controlled environment, she doesn't have to worry
so much about being heard over the instruments, and
about various acoustic intricacies of the venues.
All in all, though, I say the Itch shows still kicked
arse.
