The idea, so far as it got, was not to abandon <abbr> and <expan>, but to remove
their attributes (expan and abbr, respectively). So <choice> would have a
content model of which allowed pairs such as <abbr> and <expan>, <corr> and
<sic>, <reg> and <orig>. I like the <option> option too, which might go some
way to solving the basic problem of deciding what is meaningful content inside
the <option> element and whether or not to remove the attributes.
