I think it would be <sic corr="R"> </sic> or
<corr sic=" ">R</corr> rather than two separate elements, but
some editors might prefer <add> with an explanation, as it's an
R being added to the text. Depending on the viewpoint of your editing,
it's probably possible to do it in several different ways.

Yes, white-space is fine, but you'd probably want to document in the
header what it means.
