Doubtless this would support a former student's's over-ambitious
first attempt at TEI markup, which I have quoted before (he was
asked to add name and number markup to a sample text):

   <P>...I went out to <PLACENAME>Charing-cross</PLACENAME>, to
   see <PERSONNAME>Major-General Harrison</PERSONNAME> hanged
   drawn and <NUM VALUE="0.25">quartered</NUM>, which was done
   there, he looking as cheerful as any man could do in that
