Hi there,
A discussion I was having on another mailing list questioned the best way to
indicate patronyms in marking up names in TEI. The problem, if there really is
one, arises because some believe they shouldn't be considered a surname or
foreName. Although I might be tempted towards:
<persName>
<foreName type="given">Vladimir</foreName>
<foreName type="patronym">Ilyich</foreName>
<surname>Lenin</surname>
</persName>
I'm not sure if it should be marked as a <surname> instead? (The guidelines
lead me to believe that <foreName type="patronym"> is probably most
appropriate.) It seems an abuse to use <genName> and less precise to use
<addName>. So, I wanted to check what others were using, if indeed anyone has
encountered or considered this a problem.
Many thanks,
-James
