Subject: Re: Markup and display of marginal annotation (fwd)
Hi Richard,
Floating in the ether is more apt than you realize. Currently hiding
out in a newly renovated apt in Paris awaiting France Telecom to get
DSL lit up. So I am on via the unknowing generosity of insecure
wireless neighbors, far enuff away to require that I leave the windows
open to get a signal. Gets chilly at night. :-)
PhiloLogic has a couple of different ways to handle notes. There is
the AJAX and JS model, which opens a spot in the text and gets the
offending object (which are indexed in a standoff table). We also
have another model which simply opens another browser window and puts
the note there. Finally, for those of you with access to the Philo
install of EEBO-TCP:
http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/EEBO/index.html
we have some Javascript which calculates roughly where to put a note in
a "margin" along side the text. I rather like this one for many of the
EEBO texts which have *lots* marginal notation. We have not set this
up to be toggled, but it would not be hard. Finally, Paul Caton may
have a version that generates valid XHTML and yet another way of
handling this.
Getting chilly, so I'll go close the window now. :-)

Agreed, point by point. And as none of my publicly accessible versions
contain critical apparatus then I haven't needed to resort to this AJAX
functionality of Philologic. Still, its good to know that I can make a
complex apparatus disappear if needed. I'm not sure, though, whether
the visibility of marginal material can be toggled. The details here
don't say:

I'm sure Mark Olsen could answer your query. Mark, are you out there in
the aether?
Best regards,
Richard
