I think the pretty-printing might be broken for some of the examples
leaving out spaces before certain mixed-content elements. I was going
to report it on Sourceforge, but it appears to be having problems at the
moment so will do so later. But that really isn't your question.
In any case:

I do this usually. I provide inter-word spaces outside of such
elements. (I also routinely mark-up word-level segments, and then in my
xsl I strip-space between them and manually added back in to make sure
I'm controlling whitespace.)
