Dear all,

Apologies for a long silence and thanks Dot for reminding me of bringing this event to the list's attention.
Perry, other members of this list and myself took part to the seminar "Knowledge representation for intelligent music processing" at the SchlossDagstuhl (http://www.dagstuhl.de/en/program/calendar/semhp/?semnr=09051) last January.

The Dagstuhl seminars are designed to be improvised and grow and change during the days dedicated to them. This approach has encouraged the formation of small groups of scholars concentrating on a specific topic. One of the groups discussed issues on digital scholarly edition of music.

During the meeting the conversation focused on data interchange between different encoding systems, the proposal of a formalized way to describe notation file formats through a set of features (a "Dagtsuhl Core" as named by Andreas Kornstädt) and the possibility of finding common structures in all kinds of music notation (from different ages) that might offer a basic level of interchangeability between supported formats (this topic was mainly addressed by Ted Dumitrescu, Laurent Pugin and Perry Roland).

Finally the group addressed MEI as a potential model for editorial / scholarly music notation encoding. This last point led to a general consent for further activities on MEI, therefore a small Study Group for the future development of MEI was founded by Johannes Kepper, Laurent Pugin, Perry Roland, Daniel Röwenstrunk, Joachim Veit and Raffaele Viglianti.
Important goals of the Study Group are a transition from DTD to ODD, providing a comprehensive documentation with best practice examples, speeding up the general development.

The activity of this Study Group might be a natural partner for the SIG on the MEI side, as a transition to ODD would help to bridge the gap between TEI and MEI and open to further research on harmonization and interoperability of the two encodings.

Proceedings form the seminar are available here:

Best wishes,
Raffaele

Subject: Knowledge representation for intelligent music processing: Report?

Hello List,

I see that both Raffaele and Perry attended the recent workshop on
"Knowledge representation for intelligent music processing" at the
SchlossDagstuhl
(http://www.dagstuhl.de/en/program/calendar/semhp/?semnr=09051). Was
anything discussed there of relevance to the TEI SIG? Can you perhaps
provide a short report for the list?

many thanks,
Dot
