Hi all,
Time to chime in, I think.

We have been doing something similar with a <letDesc> element in our
DALF customization (DALF documentation:
<http://www.kantl.be/ctb/project/dalf/dalfdoc/index.html> -- example
edition: <http://www.vnsbrieven.org/VNS/?lang=en>). Being a TEI P4
customization, it is in dire need of updating to P5. We have made some
steps in the past (see
<http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0911&L=TEI-CORRESP-SIG&T=0&F=&S=&P=374>),
and recently I've started to prepare a purely 'technical' conversion of
DALF P4 to an ODD version. That is, without much (needed) conceptual
rethinking. Though not complete yet, I'm pleased by the relative ease of
ODD writing which proves less tough than I'd estimated before.
So, yes, we at the Centre for Scholarly Editing and Document Studies
(<http://ctb.kantl.be/>) are definitely in favour of
correspondence-specific TEI features. I hope to find the time to study
Peter's ODD (capitals ;-)) proposal soon; we hope to find common ground
and definitely want to share our DALF knowledge, and help establishing a
broad consensus on how to optimally represent letters in TEI.
Kind regards,
Ron
