A couple of largely orthogonal points:

* left() and right() seem like the wrong names, unless there's some 
finessing for bi-directional and vertically-oriented text I'm missing.

* the using terms such as "the current spec" we need to be clear which 
spec we're talking about the TEI spec, rather than any of the other 
several specs in play, particularly since if we're going to see an 
implementation developed and deployed it's not just going to be a TEI thing.

* the first URL does work quite right for me (includes a trailing ')')

* the point you make about not just xpointer use is a good one, I'll 
admit to having lots sight of that.

* the point "The first parameter of any function must be either an IDREF 
or an XPath (obviously only an XPath in the case of the xpath*() 
function(s)." seems to exclude the possibility that there's a URL there? 
That doesn't seem right.

I think it's also worth thinking about the minimum scheme(s) with which 
we could implement SOM based on the use cases we've already developed.
