In the <refsDecl> <step> tag, there is support for the element ("gi"),
the value attribute ("att"), and the delimiter ("delim"). In a situation
where we have numbered stanzas within numbered cantos within numbered
books in the Faerie Queene, and we use the stepwise numbering scheme,
we have something like this:
<div2 type="stanza" id=1.1.1>
for the first stanza in the first canto in the first book. I believe the
<step> tag would then read something like:
<step gi=div2 att=id delim=".">
I wonder if it wouldn't be useful to also document the fact that div2,
in this case, is a stanza and that div1 is a canto, etc. I can see
one problem immediately, and that is that any div may not consistently
be a "stanza" or whatever it generally is in a given work. For example,
the FQ may consist primarily of cantos at level div1, but may have
prefacing material before cantos at the same level in each book. Is
it ultimately so unpredictable that it is counterproductive to try to
document the type= values in a work, or is that unpredictability even
more argument to document it, as in?
<step gi=div1 type=preface|canto att=id delim=".">
