The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, an
internationally recognized humanities research and computing
organization at the University of Virginia, is soliciting applications
for the position of Project Director. This is a general faculty position
(faculty classification, non-tenure track, no teaching responsibilities)
with a three-year renewable contract. The Project Director reports to
the Director of the Institute and is responsible for working with the
Institute's fellows--faculty members in the humanities from the
University of Virginia and elsewhere--to define project goals, design
systems to realize those goals and train project managers and staff who
will work on these projects. The Project Director will also contribute
to the design of software tools that meet the needs of humanities
scholars, present the work of the Institute and its fellows to visitors
and at relevant national and international conferences and meetings,
chair the committee that selects faculty fellows, and collaborate with
the Institute's Director and Technical Director on fund-raising and
grant-writing activities. A thorough mastery of Standard Generalized
Markup Language is required for this position, as is training in systems
engineering or equivalent experience acquired through project
management, and a broad acquaintance with computer systems. Some ability
to program in interpreted languages such as Perl is desirable, and
awareness of standards such as Java, Unicode, and VRML will be a plus.
To apply, please sent a letter and resume to: John Unsworth, Project
Director Search Committee Chair, Institute for Advanced Technology in
the Humanities, Alderman Library, University of Virginia,
Charlottesville, VA 22903, by November 1, 1996. IATH and the University
of Virginia are Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employers.

John Unsworth / Director, IATH / Dept. of English
