A Tribute to Siouxsie and the Banshees: Reflections in the Looking Glass
was released in 1996. It was apparently reissued recently under the title
Strawberry Girl. I find most of the tracks to be watered-down takes on the
Banshees versions. Switchblade Symphony's experimental interpretation of
"Night Shift" doesn't succeed completely (and they didn't even bother to
take a look at a lyric sheet), but at least they tried to do something
different. I like Corpus Delecti's version of "Head Cut," which manages to
steer clear of the soundalike/wannabe territory. I think Ex-Voto's
"Monitor" chugs along nicely, and The Last Dance with Kelly Garret manages
to make "Cities in Dust" sound almost - I dunno - folky. For the most part,
though, I think most of the bands featured would do well to find better,
less generic-sounding singers.
