Working with TEI in the last years gave me the impression that SGML/TEI
is not a good format for the end user. The limited capabilities and the
high price policy of the browser software forbids its use in the
academic world. On the other hand I do think that TEI is the best
storage format for electronic editions. In our publication of the text
of the young Goethe we therefore put a Teilite version of the text on
the cd-rom (without software) and a version of the text with software,
which probably will be outdated in 10 years. I still hope that XML will
change this situation. Does anybody know whether the long announced work
on a conversion/adaption of the TEI dtds to XML dtds has begun, whether
a working group has started on this task or whether P. Bonhomme's trial
version is still the only thing around? Fotis Jannidis
