I am new to SGML and TEI, and am trying to work out a local
specification for representing subjective elements in text.  The goal is
to mark strings of words tagged with <w>...</w>, where there is some
surrounding markup laying out the syntax tree of the natural language.
 
Has anyone done something similiar to this using <seg> or some other
tag?  One concern of ours is that our annotations may span over phrase
and clause boundaries without corresponding neatly to the syntax at all.
