Here's an alternative account, shot from the hip.<br><br>Rather than seeing the tolerance of long words and homophony in Hawaiian as<br>the result of the replacement of the segment by the syllable as the basic<br>unit of phonological representation, I think it's probably more likely due<br>to an increase in morphological complexity / compounding in the Hawaiian<br>lexicon. Using other verbs attributively is, I think, a relative clause.
