The TEI Consortium (TEI-C) and by extension the TEI Community as a whole have been named the recipient of the Antonio Zampolli Prize to be awarded at the Digital Humanities 2017 conference (http://dh2017.adho.org) in Montréal, Canada. Nancy Ide, Michael Sperberg-McQueen, and Lou Burnard will accept the prize on behalf of the TEI-C and TEI Community.

The Antonio Zampolli Prize is an award of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO). It is named in honor of the late Professor Antonio Zampolli (1937-2003), who was one of the founding members of the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing in 1973. Most befitting, Zampolli was a champion for the Text Encoding Initiative, from the early days through the inception of the TEI Consortium.

This will be the third Antonio Zampolli Prize awarded by ADHO and the first granted to a community, which is a testament to the truly collaborative nature of the TEI and the broad scholarly impact made by all of us as contributors to the standard, participants of special interest groups, speakers at our annual conference, and teachers of text encoding.

According to Michael Sperberg-McQueen’s “In Memoriam” to Zampolli, Antonio had a zest for life, and can be credited for kick-starting the TEI initiative in Pisa soon after the well-known Poughkeepsie Planning Conference of November 1987 (https://listserv.brown.edu/archives/cgi-bin/wa?A2=TEI-L;acc9b339.0308). From Michael’s post we can also tell that Zampolli had a reputation for adventurous driving. Zampolli embodied all the qualities — dedication, experimentation, and a little bit of crazy — that make the TEI the vibrant community that it is today. The Antonio Zampolli Prize is indeed an honor!

Congratulations, all,
Michelle, Chair of the TEI-C Board
