Job Description

Providence Children's Museum
Providence Children's Museum is the state's only museum especially
for children, their families, teachers and other care providers. Its
mission is to inspire learning through active play and exploration.
A private, not-for-profit educational organization, the museum has
served the public since 1977. The Museum has an operating budget of
$1,000,000 and a staff of 25 full and part-time professionals.
Families Together Program
The Families Together Program at Providence Children's Museum is a
therapeutic visitation program designed in collaboration with Rhode
Island Department for Children, Youth and Families to serve parents
and children who have been separated by court order due to abuse or
neglect. Participants are referred to the program by their
caseworkers to help them rebuild relationships and strengthen
parenting skills.
The Children's Museum offers a family-centered environment as an
alternative to visitation rooms at DCYF Regional offices where
caseworkers or case aides supervise family visits. Families Together
participants - children ages one to eleven, their parents and, in
some cases, extended family members - make a series of bi-weekly
visits to the museum under the guidance of the program's family
therapists.
Since its inception in 1991 the Families Together program has come to
be highly valued by DCYF administrators and caseworkers and its staff
are regarded as experts in family visitation. This success has
prompted DCYF to request and approve a pilot program to expand
Families Together.
Families Together is currently seeking two family clinicians for the
pilot program. These full time positions require the therapist to
work three days a week in a DCYF regional office (East Bay or South
County) and two days at the Museum. The clinicians report to the
Families Together Director and work closely with the respective DCYF
Regional Director.
The Families Together Clinicians supervise family visits at their
respective regional offices and at the Museum, assess family
strengths and needs, document their observations, assist parents and
children to acquire effective communication skills. They train
caseworkers in therapeutic visitation techniques and advise them as
they develop visitation goals and permanency plans for the children.
In addition to their work in the regional offices, each Families
Together Clinicians carries a caseload of eight families visiting at
the Museum. As part of the treatment team, the Clinicians work with
caseworkers, therapists, Family Court, legal aides, foster parents,
educators and day care providers. They are responsible for court
reports as requested by DCYF and Family Court.
The successful candidates will be creative team players with
experience in the fields of human development or human services with
a BSW or related degree (Masters level preferred). We seek
compassionate, flexible individuals with experience/knowledge of
child welfare systems and familiarity with current practices in
substance abuse, domestic violence, and mental health. A background
in play/recreation therapy and clinical experience with
children/families at risk is extremely helpful.
