Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island (EJLRI)
Community Project Coordinator

The Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island (EJLRI) seeks an experienced community organizer, educator, and/or project coordinator to 1) lead our home weatherization project, 2) provide primary support for the Community Environmental College, an 8-week summer youth program focused on developing youth leadership on environmental issues, and 3) support the Director with other EJLRI initiatives both in programmatic and administrative capacities.  

EJLRI currently has one full-time staff (the Director) and a very active Board that participates in ongoing activities.  In addition to those listed above, our priority projects include 1) leading an EPA-funded project, CARE (Community Action for a Renewed Environment) to identify sources of toxic hazards in Providence and create an action plan to address these issues; 2) organizing residents to monitor the progress of the Gorham Manufacturing brownfield cleanup; and 3) leading the Providence Healthy Corner Store Initiative to help small store owners stock and sell healthier food in their stores.

Responsibilities Include:
    
•	Leading the coordination of EJLRI’s home weatherization project to conduct 8 “barn-raising” events and 4 team leader trainings. This includes: outreach to current and new volunteers and homeowners, working with weatherization job training programs, training volunteers, ordering materials, coordinating the barn-raisings, and evaluating the program
•	Serving as the primary coordinator of the Community Environmental College. This includes: develop and implement outreach and recruitment , assisting in the creation and improvement of CEC curriculum, managing all logistical aspects of the CEC, and seeking funding opportunities to continue and expand as a year-round after school youth program.
•	Assisting EJLRI’s Director on other projects, as needed.  This includes: organizing, coordinating, and facilitating community meetings and conducting outreach to community-based and governmental organizations, attending coalition meetings, giving public presentations, and work on grant-writing
•	Hours will include some evenings and weekends, as needed.

  Qualifications Include:

    * Experience and passion for working towards social justice and improving the lives and environments of low income and/or minority people.
    * Experience working with youth, especially in settings outside of traditional educational environments, and a passion for youth leadership development.
    * A general understanding of community organizing and advocacy as strategies to improve people’s lives and make positive social change.
    * Ability to work independently and cooperatively with volunteers, members, and Board of Directors in a culturally diverse environment.
    * Proficiency in another language other than English is a plus.
    * Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparing and delivering public presentations.
    * Proven team player with effective interpersonal skills, such as leadership and team building.
    * Ability to design a work plan, prioritize and meet goals.
    * Experience with database systems and grants management highly desirable. Knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel programs also desirable.
    * Familiarity and/or experience with environmental and public health issues.
    * Flexibility, sense of humor, and a strong interest in working for a start-up non-profit organization

Salary for the position is $32,000/year plus full health benefits.  This position is currently funded for 1 year, and may continue depending on grant funding.  Expected start date is projected for December 15, 2011, though the start date could be earlier if possible.  We would also consider hiring two people for half-time positions (20 hours a week) with half benefits.
