correspSearch: New Tools, New Data - and an Award

Connecting scholarly editions of letters - this is now even easier with
the new tools from correspSearch (https://correspSearch.net ): The
Javascript widget “csLink” connects letter editions with each other in a
whole new way. The extensively revised CMIF Creator 2 enables scholars
to create easily digital indexes of letters from their printed editions.
And there have also been other improvements at correspSearch in the last
months.

*csLink: Show extended correspondence context*

The JavaScript widget “csLink” refers from an edited letter in its own
digital scholarly edition to letters of the correspondence partners at
the same time from other (even printed) editions. The widget
automatically queries the correspSearch API for letters from the same
period with the same sender or recipient. The latter is done by
specifying an authority file ID, such as VIAF. The widget can be
configured, e.g. how long the requested period should be or how many
letters should be displayed. Interested scholars can get an idea of how
the widget works in the “edition humboldt digital” (e.g. in the letter
to Soemmerring dated 5.12.1793, https://edition-humboldt.de/H0002655,
link "Briefnetz erkunden" in top right corner). As a Javascript widget
and based on the HMTL/CSS framework Bootstrap, csLink can be integrated
into any digital edition in just a few simple steps. It is freely
licensed (LGPL) and can be downloaded from our GitHub repository:
https://github.com/correspSearch/csLink/releases.

*CMIF Creator 2: Create digital indexes of letters*

The “CMIF Creator” allows you to easily create form-based digital
indexes of letters from printed editions in the Correspondence Metadata
Interchange Format (CMIF) [1] - even without technical knowledge. The
CMIF Creator is now available in a completely revised version 2. In
addition to many minor improvements in the user interface and optimized
performance, two major new features have also been added: On the one
hand it is now possible to select directly in the form the ID matching
to a person or corporation from the Integrated Authority File (GND).
CMIF Creator 2 uses the GND API provided by lobid.org. On the other
hand, the CMIF Creator 2 now validates the input and provides detailed
information about errors both during input and when saving. The CMIF
Creator is available for immediate use at
https://correspsearch.net/index.xql?id=participate, where you will also
find detailed step-by-step instructions.

*New data*

In addition to the new tools, many new correspondence metadata from
various editing projects and institutions have been made available as
CMIF and aggregated in correspSearch in recent months: for example, the
digital edition of August Wilhelm Schlegel's correspondence [2], Jean
Paul's letters [3] or letters from the digital scholarly edition “DER
STURM” [4] - to name just a few. The correspondence of the Norwegian
writer Camilla Collet between 1841 and 1851 is also completely new. The
CMIF of this correspondence edition is the first delivery of the project
“Norske Korrespondanser - Norwegian Correspondences” (NorKorr) [5] which
was initiated in autumn at the Norwegian National Library by Annika
Rockenberger and has the goal of making Norwegian historian
correspondence accessible.
In the meantime, about 47,000 edited letters are listed in the web
service. The web service is dependent on digital indexes of letters,
therefore new metadata from digital or printed letter editions are very
welcome.

*Last but not least: an award*

At the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) conference in Tokyo in September,
the projects correspDesc [6], CMIF [7] and correspSearch were awarded
the “Rahtz Prize for TEI Ingenuity 2018”. It is awarded by the TEI
Consortium in memory of TEI member Sebastian Rahtz (1955-2016) and
honours individuals or groups who make a significant contribution to TEI
through non-commercial and publicly accessible projects and initiatives.
From the jury's statement: “Given the significance of letters as
important historical sources for many disciplines, the work on
correspDesc, CMIF & correspSearch has over the last couple of years
contributed significantly to pushing forward the TEI regarding the
encoding of letters, but also digital scholarly editing of primary
sources in general. The project follows an open, standards-based,
TEI-aware web development strategy, provides excellent documentation and
has great potential for use in cultural heritage institutions,
especially those with limited resources to spare on detailed
descriptions of their primary sources.”

The correspSearch project team - together with its partners – feels very
honored to receive this award!
