Saw a 3/12 old baby who'd been in a housefire/explosion who arrived in ED on
Sunday with soot all over his face and in his nostrils. Couldn't get iv
access so put in intraosseous needle and sent off a healthy volume of
aspirate to labs and included a request for Group & Save (blood typing),
before doing RSI through the needle.
Haematology technician phones up saying the specimen's no good. I explain
it's marrow and we'd like a group and save and after some persuasion she
calls her boss who absolutely refuses saying it's not blood it's "tissue"
and cannot be used for G&S.
1. Is he right? UK APLS teaching says he isn't.
2. Best way forward to avoid this recurring?
