Hello Hugh,

Sorry, no I didn't. The photographer is Mark Zurl:

http://www.deeperstuff.com/

The divers are from the Association of Underwater Explorers, a very good
group of divers off Pompano Beach ... I had the pleasure of diving with
them twice. Their crowd inspired me to pursue tech diving, but around
their neighborhood.

http://www.mikey.net/aue/

He uses an Olympus 3030 in a Light and Motion Housing ... here are some models.

http://www.uwimaging.com/products/qtvr/tetra3030.htm
http://www.cameratech.com/Products/Light_Motion_Tetra_Housing.html

About $2000 for camera and housing, give Mark a buzz for details.
Compared to Ikelite, it gives a very streamlined almost glove-like wrap
around the camera.

Both the 3030 and the Coolpix 990 have similar default ISO, which is
~80. Its adjustable for a Coolpix, I own an older 950, to ISO 320. For
the settings Mark uses, I'd touch base with him. You can adjust the ISO,
or any setting, at depth, and the point-shoot photographer can take
wonderful photographs. The LCD screen nearly eliminates parallax error in
framing subjects.

Steve's site gives excellent reviews and sample photographs from all major
digital cameras available.

These aren't my shots, but of a coolpix 950 u/w. But it demonstrates some
color fringing errors, the color shifts you speak off, but they can be
corrected with software like Photoshop.

>Nice pic's & nice writeup! Looks like your viz was indeed quite good.

Thank you, I was very very surprised. They tell me its typical around
their neighborhood. I dove a ship called the Lowrance with them in May,
around 210 fsw on trimix. The vis was under 10 feet for the first 100 fsw,
until, like breaking a cloud bank, you penetrate this 'fog layer' to appear
at the bottom with 100 ft vis, vert and horiz.

The color emphasis depends on a particular model, but its user adjustable
to some extent. The Coolpix tends to overemphasize blues, most obviously in
sun versus artificial lighting. Since the late 1990s, color shifts hasn't
been a big concern because of software availability, the major problem
continues to be pixel resolution. Since the 2 Megapixels, digital
photography been quite decent. See Steve's Digicam site for details. The
top models these days are the Olympus and Coolpix.

The single largest problem with Digital cameras is flooding. It may
permanently destroy the camera, or repair = a total loss, at least the
memory cards used to store images.

Warm regards,

Marv
