Another astronomical posting in Esperanto, for those who can read the
language (or who want to exercise their reading skills relating to a
somewhat more technical topic than usual).

This one particularly interested me. Back in late spring or early summer, a
group from the Institute for Astronomy in Hawai'i announced the discovery
of a large Kuiper Belt object which they named Varuna. (The Kuiper Belt is
a shell of space outside the orbit of Neptune -- I don't know how far it
extends.) At the time, it was the largest such object (and apparently they
can get pretty large). Now a European team, using not only current
observations but an archival research system, has discovered an even larger
object, the one described here, which likely has a diameter of 1200
kilometers, making it the _largest_ sub-planetary body in the solar system
(the asteroid Ceres, discovered on the very first day of the 19th century,
held the record for just over 200 years). In fact, its size is comparable
to that of its neighbor Pluto, which it probably resembles, and will likely
add fuel to the argument -- being presented today by a number of
astronomers -- that Pluto should be reduced from the status of planet to
that of ordinary (well, somewhat large) Kuiper Belt object.

Note: these translations are _not_ put together in a way that is guaranteed
to provide a _prima vista_ comprehensibility to those who are already
familiar with the technical terminology as used in several Western
languages; people who want that can read the English version. I have
generally tried, while not stepping beyond the bounds of the Astronomia
Terminaro and the Esperanta Terminaro de Fiziko, to profit from some of
Esperanto's peculiar advantages. I am aiming these translations primarily
at the Esperanto-speaking layman, not at the English-speaking (or perhaps
polyglot) professional.

legekzercilon.

Virtuala Teleskopo Observas Superrekordan Asteroidon [1]

Novaj Donitajxoj Montras, ke "2001 KX76" Estas Pli Granda ol Cereso

diametro 1200-kilometra, eble ecx 1400-kilometra.

PR Fotajxo 27a/01: Bildo de "2001 KX76", havigita pere de la MPG/ESO
2.2-metra teleskopo cxe La Silla.
Kuiperzonaj Objektoj kaj Plutono.

Iliaj mezuroj indikas, ke tiu frosta roko havas diametron minimume

Tiu
progresinta prototipa scienca esplorilo, kiu efektive mimas teleskopon,

Gxi tamen aspektis grande,
eble same kiel la plej granda konata asteroido, Cereso, kies diametron oni
pli frue mezuris je proksimume 950 kilometroj.

Teamo da germanaj, suomaj kaj svedaj astronomoj [2] iniciatis plenumi pli
Objekto gxis nun eltrovita.

Plutono, kaj ties luno, Hxarono.

fine kalkuli gxian diametron.

plakoj oni faris tiel frue, kiel 1982.

minimume 1200-kilometran. Se oni anstatauxe supozas albedon de 2001 KX76
nur 4-elcenta -- tipa valoro por glacieca kometaj kernoj -- tio rezultigas
ecx pli grandan (tamen malpli probablan) valoron 1400-kilometran.

nun esti supozata relative sekura, kaj tial gxi baldaux povos ricevi veran
nomon.

Laux astronomia tradicio, la eltrovintoj rajtas sugesti nomon. Aktuala
kutimo diktas, ke Kuiperzona Objekto ricevu mitan nomon ligitan kun kreo.

kunlaborado, kiu povas okazi inter bone ekipitaj amatoraj astronomoj kaj
profesiaj astronomoj", li diras. "TTT kaj aliro al 'virtualaj observejoj'
signifas, ke ankaux amatoraj astronomoj -- longe for de iuj ajn 'realaj'
profesiaj teleskopoj -- povas grave kontribui".

tehxniko kunigita kun novtipa scienca proceduro povis estigi rezultojn,

Edinburgo (Britio), CDS (Strasburgo, Francio), CNRS (Parizo, Francio) kaj

donitajxo-traktado, arhxivado, kaj teleskopo-uzado.

Arhxivoj de astronomiaj donitajxoj pli kaj pli similas virtualajn
orminejojn da informajxoj. Nuntempe, astronomiaj teleskopoj povas bildigi
