It was several years ago that I first read it, but I remember thinking that
"Creating and Documenting Electronic Texts: A Guide to Good Practice," by
Alan Morrison, Michael Popham, and Karen Wikander--especially chapters 4
and 5--was probably a better place to start than the introductory chapters
of the official TEI guidelines, which made much more sense afterward. It's
available both online (at http://ota.ahds.ac.uk/documents/creating/) and in
print (ISBN: 1842170120).
