First, I have to admit I'm not 100% sure what it is you are trying to
indicate as simultaneous -- just the beginnings and ends of these
"sequences", or each individual <sp> within them, or each individual
typographic line within them (or something else)?

In any case, the first thing to note is that P4 provides a mechanism
for this very purpose, either in 14.4.1 "Correspondence" if what you
wish to do is indicate that these two sections of text correspond
somehow -- perhaps what you'd need to encode Simon & Garfunkel's "7
o'clock News/Silent Night" (which I'm guessing is what you want, since
you used corresp= not synch= in your post), or in 14.5 "Synchroniz-
ation" if what you really need is to indicate the exact sequence of
utterances -- what you'd need to encode the marvelous rounds of PDQ
Bach, e.g. "Please, Kind Sir".

The difficulty with the mechanism described in 14.4.1 for your
situation is that it appears to be aimed at indicating correspondence
between lower (in the XML tree meaning) elements than what you have
in mind:

  Where the correspondence is between <emph>spans</emph>, the
  <gi>seg</gi> element should be used, if no other element is
  available.

From what you've said, it would seem that not only is <seg> an
insufficiently large container for the spans of text you're dealing
with, <ab> is not large enough (or else you and Michael Beddow would
have used <ab type="sequence">, I presume. The problem here, of
course, is that an <ab> is on a par with <p>, and thus although it
can appear within <sp>, it cannot contain one.)

However, a span of text can always be indicated by a pair of empty
elements. If you really eschew the use of <cb> (which would seem
perfectly appropriate), <anchor> would certainly do.

The obvious significant disadvantage here is that software that will
process those extended pointer attributes is very rare. On the other
hand, do you have software that will process your <sequence> elements?
:-) Either way, I think it is safe to say that the the above mechanism
will be available in P5 using some more processable method of pointing
(almost assuredly W3C XPointers), and that automated conversion from
P4 extended pointers to P5 XPointers should be possible.


So, having said that, on to your question:

Looks bad.

In particular, looks like a modified copy of the *flattened*
declaration of <div>. While this may work, it has lots of problems,
not the least of which if you make any changes to the component,
divbot, divtop, or m.Incl classes those changes will not be reflected
in your <sequence> element. It would be far better to modify the
source declaration of <div> (which can be found in file teistr2.dtd),
e.g.:
