I am curious how other peds ER groups handle hematemesis in the preschool
and school age ranges.
How do you quantitate the amount of blood that has been vomited? Do you
perform gastric lavage, or is there a set
of historical and clinical variables that allow you to avoid this? What are
your gastroenterologists criteria for endoscopy?
We have had significant pathology missed by false negative gastric lavages.
Thank you for your input.
