I think a bare <title> will probably suffice in our case, Syd: I've
recursed on this problem too long and have made it needlessly
complicated. The issue developed, I think, out of rendering
concerns--when to italicize a title and when to put it in
quotations--and somewhere along the line the simple idea of <title
type="blah"> (where blah is an element of a controlled vocabulary
derived from, say, the AAT) got lost. (Note I didn't suggest <title
rend="italic">...) Thanks for breaking the loop.
There still might be room for discussion of a general <object> element
for tagging "things," but I won't start it...
