I recently encountered an institution that routinely obtains blood cultures
from a heel stick. They state that the site is topically sterilized and
blood is obtained using sterile technique, which I assume includes the use
of sterile gloves and syringes to "scoop" up the blood.
My question for the group is if anyone has heard of this method and is there
any literature or protocols supporting this practice?
