Elision would work, I suppose, but I still wish to distinguish between
multi-word ("it's") and single-word ("pav'd") contractions. How about
type="extraclitic" and type="intraclitic", with an appropriate explanation
in the encodingDesc?

An enclitic is a word pronounced with the preceding word. "pav'd" would
be an example of elision (omission of vowel). Perhaps type="elision"
would cover both cases? type="enclitic" certainly wouldn't.
