Reminder to participate in the Markup Analysis Project, Text Encoding
Initiative Survey 2006-2007
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind & encourage you to
participate in the Markup Analysis Project. The project is a markup
usage study and survey, undertaken by the Information Policy & Practice
Research Group at the University of Sydney, Australia, that has been
designed to further our understanding of the use of the Text Encoding
Initiative Guidelines in scholarly communication and electronic
publishing. The project combines a survey of practitioners
(questionnaire) with a content analysis of the documents that are
encoded (through a study of tag usage).
Early signs are that our survey package mailout sent mid to late
December has made it through the Xmas post and we are starting to
receive a good number of replies back now. Feedback from the TEI
community has thus far been very supportive.
The survey package provides details on how to complete the questionnaire
and contribute encoded text for markup analysis. We have also provided
two reply paid post envelops that you can use to send your response in
with. Although we have requested between 5-10 encoded texts (and
supporting DTDs), smaller projects, with fewer files than this are also
encouraged to contribute. The undertakings of small projects are as
important to this study as those of larger initiatives.
We would like to receive all electronic files by late January/early
February if at all possible. All project documentation, including a pdf
form version of the questionnaire and details for the (ftp) submission
of encoded text files, is provided at the project website:
Alternatively if you prefer to send files directly to me by email
attachment I can also receive them that way.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. With your help,
this study will achieve its aim for a clearer understanding of digital
content development that will support the ongoing work of all
practitioners. By reporting back on our findings to the community we are
aiming to support a wider understanding of practice.
If you would like to participate in this study and have not yet received
a survey package please contact me at any time.
I need to alert current participants to an error in the posted
questionnaire that made it through our pre-testing unnoticed. At Item 47
there should be no branching. Please proceed directly to Item 48
irrespective of your YES/NO response to Item 47 in the questionnaire.
