We are trying to deal with limited plastic surgery coverage. I am trying to find
out how other institutions handle their complex wounds.
!. What kind of cases are referred to the plastic surgeon in your institution?
A. Large deep vertical laceration to the forehead?
B. Complex vermillion border laceration?
C. Dog bite to the face with 3 -- 2 cm irregular lacerations to the cheek?
D. Parents request a plastic surgeon on a laceration that does not
require plastics repair?
2. If you don't refer to these cases to a plastic surgeon, who repairs the
wound -- peds/EM residents?? ED attendings?? Dedicated suture tech??
3. Do you ever repair a wound knowing that it will have to be revised by a
plastic surgeon later, either in followup days or months later?
4. Finally, do you pay your plastic surgeons to take call?
