In such cases, they're typing TEI code into the application, because
they happen to know some TEI markup. The fact that it's aimed at novices
doesn't preclude an expert using it, and adding whatever markup they're
comfortable with. Generally, in our projects, our markup folks know a
little TEI, and when they need to do a specific thing (like linking from
one document to another), we'll sit down and work out a formula for how
to do it, which they then apply.
