As you are aware of the benefits of having a database of everything
transcribed, let me point out that having the transcription in TEI
format amounts to having a database in exactly the same way, with
the difference that your query language would be XSLT.
The obvious advantage (/wrt to MSWord) is the possibility to convert
the TEI to any other format you like. So, with TEI you have both a
database and a universal format where, with MS software, you would
have needed two (Word and Excel) for a similar but even less satisfying
