Today's NY Times has a feature on decidedly unpleasant car-bike
interactions. It is worth reading, but is not at all encouraging.
It also reinforces, to me, the idea that some of the pro-bike rallies
in which bikes shut down the evening commute area actually counter
productive not matter how righteous they make the protagonists feel.
I should note that as one who both drives a car and rides a bike, I
have seen bikers who really do irritate me. A particular problem
from the standpoint of drivers is groups of riders, on narrow roads,
riding side-by-side. Given that this applies to nearly every road in
RI and MA, there really is not much room for somebody meandering
around in the traffic lane while chatting with some one on the right
hand side of the road.
While I am at it, I will note a personal peeve: People riding
side-by-side on the bike path, often occupying a portion of both
sides of the path, who make no effort to clear a space for people
coming from the opposite direction.
