Dear PEM Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for you to help create a national online educational resource for subspecialty fellows and recent Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship graduates about the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system in the United States. The educational content of this resource will focus on the recommended content areas defined by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) for the PEM subspecialty certification examination.
To create this educational resource, Dr. Marianne Gausche-Hill and I will be forming a Steering Committee composed of 4 additional content-matter experts in EMS.
Steering Committee Member Roles are as follows:
• To identify the most relevant and up to date literature to use as references for the educational resource
• To develop an outline and corresponding content to include for each component in the educational resource.
• To attend a 2 day Steering Committee meeting in Houston, Texas in the late Summer/early Fall of 2010 (travel, lodging, and meal expenses will be reimbursed)
• To evaluate a draft and create a final version of the educational resource
• To identify current PEM fellows and recent graduates to pilot test the educational resource
Each Steering Committee member will receive a $1,000 honorarium for his/her contributions to this project, which has been funded by an Educational Scholarship Award through the Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics.
The limited exposure that subspecialty PEM fellows have to the EMS system during their training may prevent them from establishing a career niche in this vital area of the continuum of pediatric emergency care. Since further research, education, and advocacy is needed to address the disparities in care that children face in our nation’s EMS system, it is essential to educate PEM physicians about EMS early in their careers. The enduring educational resource produced from this project has the potential to improve PEM physician knowledge of the EMS system. This improved knowledge may lead PEM subspecialty fellows and recent graduates to dedicate their careers to improving pediatric prehospital care.
If you are interested in serving on the Steering Committee for this project, please fax, mail, or e-mail the following by Friday, May 14th:
* An updated curriculum vitae
* A letter describing your interest in participating in this project
Applicants will be notified by Monday, June 5th. Please send all correspondence to:
