We have recently seen an increased census of children with psychiatric complaints that requires hospitalization. Our local resources are limited including no inpatient child psychiatry unit at our facility, resulting in extended LOS in the ED. We recently had a child for 6 days in the ED awaiting bed placement. Inpatient teams are concerned about safety issues and we cannot admit to the inpatient team.
I am curious if others have a similar situation and what strategies have been used within and outside your facility to reduce LOS for these children.
Thanks in advance,
