Since this query emerges from an in-house problem we're facing, I'll add
that we know how to put a little marker at the start of the
(add|del)Span and another little marker at the end. :-)
The challenge is to do something special in HTML output with the nodes
in between. Not a problem if the span tags enclose a single XML element
or sequence of nodes that are well-formed if wrapped inside an element;
much trickier if the contents cross element boundaries.
