Today I came to think of the weirdest orthography I've
yet created and ended up writing a lengthy description.

### Vowels

The vowel phonemes, and their spellings, of the Mathi dialect, on
which the orthography is mainly based, are as follows:

The phonemic status of the vowels written with digraphs and
trigraphs is disputed both among scholars and among interested
native speakers -- notably the _káwý_, some of whom consider
assonance between _íi_ and _í_ etc. to be best avoided, while
others, like the _káwý_ of older times, use them freely).

When followed by another vowel _íi, úu, ýy ẃw_ resolve into /ɪj/,
/ʏɥ/, /əɰ/|/əɣ/, /ʊw/|/ʊʁʷ/, and the vowels spelled with a final
_a_ resolve into the corresponding vowels without _a_ + /r/ [ɾ],
which is written _r_, even at a word boundary before a word
beginning with a vowel. Notably _áa_ resolves into _ár/er/ýr_
according to their historical source in each case.

A large minority of mostly older speakers realize _ýya_ as /ɨɐ/,
_íia_ as /iɐ/, _úua_ as /øɐ/ and may realize _í_ as /e/ and _ú_
as /ø/, at least in more formal or slow speech. Speakers for whom
these realizations are not stylistic thus lack the phoneme /ᵻ/,
and sometimes also /ɪ/ and /ʏ/. This is particularly common on
Wtaa and may be considered a dialectal trait of that island,
especially as it is not as strongly age related there.

When the 'relative' suffix _-ía_ occurs after a vowel, as in
_lypýia_ 'of writing' the spelling _a_ may represent syllabic /ɐ
/.

#### The accent mark

The accent mark on _á, í, ú, ẃ_ and _ý_ is only written on every
vowel in texts for children learning to read and in some
scholarly works on linguistics and poetics. Normally it is only
used when one of these letters stands next to another _a, e, i,
o, u, w_ or _y_ -- itself with or without an accent mark -- and
on word-final _ní, nú, nẃ_ and _ný_, and -- except for the few
grammars and dictionaries, which are all written by western
scholars -- even then only when the writer perceives a possible
ambiguity in the sentence. In fact writing entirely withouth
accent marks may be said to be the native norm.  Jones sometimes
used _â, î, û, ŵ, ŷ_ for _áa, íi, úu, ẃw, ýy_ when not followed
by another vowel. Nobody else is known to ever have used this
spelling, and in fact Jones's native advisors eschewed it.

#### The Antaa dialect

The Antaa dialect has a considerably different vowel system with
contrastive length, and with _a_ realized as [ɹ], or utterance
finally as [ɳ] (sic!)^[_Antáa_ thus is /ˈantaɹ/ or [ˈantaɳ] in
the pronunciation of its natives]. The vowel phonemes with their
spellings are as follows:

While the written language is based on the Mathi dialect, and
shows a less than ideal fit for the Antaa dialect in its use of
_a_ rather than _r_, the orthographic distinction between _ía/ýa_
and _oa/oy_ is a concession to Antaa speech which is meaningless
to Mathi and Wtaa speakers, and a source of frequent misspellings
for them.  On the other hand _áa_ corresponds to /ər/ [əɹ] for
Antaa speakers, who thus would like to write it _ýa_ (or _ýr_!)

#### Realization

_c, ch, j_ and _x_, and sometimes the other palatals as well, are
realized as alveopalatals.  _z_ is a laminal alveolar fricative
or approximant while the other alveolars are apical.  Since _z_
is realized voicelessly finally and before voiceless consonants
the laminal/apical distinction is minimally contrastive.  As can
be seen in the table /hl/ is realized as an alveolar voiceless
lateral fricative.  It should be noted that all native speakers
reject a monophonemic interpretation of the sounds spelled _hi,
hl, hli, hlu_ and _hr_, and all adult native speakers as
emphatically reject a biphonemic interpretation of _q_,
notwithstanding that this letter is realized as [χʷʲ] next to _í,
íi, ú_ and _úu_, and children have been known to misspell this
sound as _hu_.  All of _i, u, w, y_ have both fricative and
approximant allophones, seemingly in free distribution, except
word finally where only the approximants occur.

##### Retroflexes in the Antaa dialect

In the Antaa dialect _dr, hr, r, sr, tr, thr, zr_, and even _as_
and _az_, are realized as fully retroflex stops and fricatives,
but speakers nonetheless prefer a biphonemic interpretation,
although they find the orthographic distinction between _hr, sr,
zr, as_ and _az_, which are all [ʂ] for them, one of the many
_lypýia romáia mathíir acái_ "Mathi excesses in the Roman
writing_.

#### Distribution

* All consonants except occur as single word-initial and
   intervocalic consonants. Initial _y_ occurs only in the
   onomatopoetic interjection _yýy_ [ɣɨ], used to mimick the sound
   of being sick or disgust.
* Word finally only voiceless stops and fricatives occur, and for
   stops and affricates this is reflected in the spelling.  For
   some speakers even nasals are devoiced utterance-finally.
* Laterals do not occur word-finally.  Underlying laterals become
   nasals in this position.  In the Antaa dialect this applies
   also to _a_ ([ɹ] in the dialect) which becomes [ɳ].  This is
   not reflected in the normal spelling, but an attempt is
   sometimes made to indicate it with _-an_.
* Consonants in clusters must agree in voicing, which leads to
   regressive assimilations which are reflected in the spelling of
   stops and affricates.
* Except in the Antaa dialect _r_ occurs only before vowels,
   being replaced by _a_ /ɐ/ elsewhere, and even in Antaa _a_
   corresponds to an [ɹ] allophone.
* The approximants/voiced fricatives _i, w_ and _y_ are subject
   to labial and palatal 'coloring' next to rounded vowels and
   high front vowels respectively.  Thus _i_ does not occur next
   to _o, ú_ or _ẃ_, and _y_ does not occur next to _í, ó, ú_ or _
   ẃ_.  This leads to morphological alternations, as between _ew_
   'tongue, language' vs. _euia_ 'of the/a tongue/language_,
   _káwý_ 'poet' vs. _káuí_ 'poetry' (loanwords from Sanskrit
   _kavi_ and _kāvya_ respectively), _máy_ 'great, strong' vs.
   _máií_ 'the great land' (Skt. _maha_ and _mahī_ respectively),
   _mauúa_ 'peacock' (Skt. _mayūra_), _low_ 'iron' (Skt. _loha_),
   _xunẃu_ 'empty' (Skt. _śūnya).
   Due to the relative rareness of _y_ and the lack of any affix
   in _-o-_ or _-ẃ-_ the change _y_ > _w_ is mostly visible in
   Indic loanwords.  The change from _li_ to _lu_ under the
   influence of a preceding vowelis observable in the Indic
   loanword _múluay_ 'value' (Skt. _mūlyaka_).  The spelling of /ʎ
   / as _lu_ and /ɲ/ as _nu_ before rounded vowels may be regarded
   as an orthographic affection copied from the _lypýir euía_.
* The only morpheme-initial clusters consist of an obstruent + an
   approximant, _r_ or _l_.  These clusters can contain any
   obstruent except _c, ch, j, li, lu, ni, nu, nw, x_ or _ny_.
* Morpheme-internally the only occurring consonant clusters are
   nasal + obstruent and _l_ + obstruent.  When a morpheme ending
   in such a cluster occurs word-finally the obstruent is lost,
   and the nasal or _l_ becomes a nasal homorganic with the lost
   obstruent.  Across morpheme boundaries many two- and
   three-consonant clusters occur.
