The healthcare system that I work in is now looking to start a peds ED at one
of our community hospitals. We, at the Children’s Hospital, will be supplying
the protocols, education etc. The big question currently being asked by
Administration is whether or not to start out 24/7 vs. 16 hours a day. A huge
element that this new peds ED will face is being the only pediatric-only ED in
that local market and the worry is that if it doesn’t start out as 24/7 “true” ED
it may be perceived by the community and medical staff as “just another
urgent care center”.
My question to the group: what, in your experience, is the current trend
when developing a satellite pediatric ED? A start-up with 24/7 coverage or a
conservative approach with <24/7 coverage? Are there other variables (other
than financial) that would point strongly towards 24/7?
