we don't make any explicit claim; but I think the man in the street, supported by the judge in chambers,
would reasonably expect that running a process on a TEI XML with and without a DOCTYPE would
return the same results. The man-on-the-street, after all, isn't expect to grok the implications of DTD processing, is she?

that may be wishful thinking. you still have the dichotomy between those workflows which use an infoset
mediated by a schema, and those which don't.
