We are encoding Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet and we seek your advice on, what we think, could be a strategic decision that may constraint all the future encoding process. We are starting using TEI and this may be a rather simple problem with a straighforward solution. If that is the case we will be grateful if you can give us some pointers to the TEI guidelines.
The Book of Disquiet comprises a set of fragments and was actually published as a book after Pessoa's death. Therefore, different editors have considered different fragments to be part of the book and have done different transcriptions of the same fragment. Additionally, they have assigned different heteronyms and dates to the same fragment. For instance, editor X says that Vicente Guedes is the heteronym for fragment F whereas editor Y says the author is Bernardo Soares. The same applies for other meta-information for the fragments.
Besides, a fragments can have several manuscripts (witnesses?) and we also want to encoding them. Overall, it is something like this, UML-like:
1* 1 * 1-4
manuscript ------- fragment --------- edition
Concerning the solution we intent to encode the book using a corpus header an an header for each one of the fragments. The problem we are facing is about how to represent the meta-information for the pair(fragment-edition), heteronym, date, etc.
We though about having a <msDesc> for each pair(fragment-edition) in addition to the <msDesc>s for each manuscript. However, the solution is not elegant because the fragment in the context of an edition is different from a fragment in the context of a manuscript, we would like to use in the <rdg> resp= for the former and wit= for the latter. Note that the editions do not state which manuscripts they used.
The mais question we have is, it is there a standard way to describe this kind of meta-information (which includes conditional information like author=BS according to edition=X and author=VG according to edition=Y) in a header?
Inline with these concerns it is not clear for us where in TEI we should declare the edition X that appears in a line break as <lb ed=X/>
Thanks very much,
