Parents are always allowed at Johns Hopkins - social work or chaplain usually assists. Most come into the room some prefer to stay at doorway or occasionally choose to wait in the family room.
We try to have parents in child's field of vision - taking to or touching the hysterical child. Not always possible if the team is very active/large but helpful more often than problematic.
