Assuming the patient load is fairly evenly spreadout over the day

1. 50k pats= 5.7 pats per hour.

2 assume an average 2 pts/hour
you would need almost 3 Fte per hour.

3. for high acuuty you may only see 1-1.6 pts/hour

4. low acuity could do3-5 pats/hour

so if you can screen and sort

use 1 Pem for high acuity
1 pediatrician for moderate

you may nee to supplement coverage with an APN or PA

good luck

It doesn't involve the ACGME/ABP yet but once more programs are developed
around the country (similar to what happened with Hospital Medicine) that
can change.
There is definitely a need for urgent care providers and considering the
fact that many recent pediatric residency graduates or practicing
pediatricians are not comfortable with basic ER skills (eg. procedures),
the fellowship will provide them with a unique opportunity to prepare for a
high volume academic urgent care setting.

This is a very interesting development and quite innovative. I assume this
does not involve the American Board of Pediatrics.

Will discussions of the former two year fellowship in peds em return? The
need is certainly present.

Just curious as a member of the first class of fellows required to do 3
years some 20 years ago.

Subject: Re: Academic Urgent Care Fellowship at Children's National

*The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children’s National is
accepting applications for a fellow in Academic Urgent Care for the
2018-19
academic year.*

This fellowship program will train general pediatric residency
graduates/general pediatricians in aspects of clinical care, procedural
skills, teaching strategies, quality improvement and research
fundamentals
related to the emerging field of pediatric urgent care. The goal of the
fellowship is to facilitate the integration of pediatricians into all
pediatric environments-emergency departments, fast track, urgent care,
private practice and develop future leaders in the field.

Fellows spend dedicated blocks of time learning from specialists in
disciplines such as orthopedics, radiology and ENT and gaining experience
in sedation, ultrasound, and procedural skills. Regularly occurring
didactics and a course in quality improvement is provided and fellows are
encouraged to participate in departmental teaching activities,
administrative committees, research, and quality improvement projects
depending on interest.

Suitable candidates must have completed a residency in pediatrics.
Interested
practicing pediatricians are also encouraged to apply. This one-year
fellowship is designed for pediatricians interested in practicing in
either
an academic or community setting who desire additional clinical and
procedural pediatric training. Fellows will work alongside Pediatric
Emergency Medicine faculty at both campuses of the Emergency Department
at
Children’s National.

          Children’s National is the only free-standing Children’s
hospital and the only Level 1 Pediatric trauma center in Washington
DC. Children’s
National has two emergency departments, a 40 bed ED located at our main
campus and a 15 bed ED at United Medical Center in Southeast Washington
DC.
Between the two campuses we see >130,000 pediatric ED visits a year. Our
large and diverse faculty consists of successful clinicians, educators,
scientists and advocates. Our physicians have full faculty appointments
in
the George Washington University School of Medicine.

To apply or for additional information, please contact the
program directors by Feb 15th, 2018.

Subject: PEM Fellow travel award to attend the PEM Special Interest Group at PAS

Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce a travel award this time available for a PEM fellow to attend the PEM Special Interest Group session at PAS this May in Toronto. The $600 award will help to offset the cost of travel to PAS.
This year's session will be combined with the Race in Medicine Special Interest Group. The session, “A Journey to a Diverse and Equitable PEM Workforce," will be an exciting opportunity for us to discuss and explore the current state of workforce diversity and equity in academic PEM, engage in a discussion of potential solutions, and identify top priorities for the future.
We ask that you please forward this email to your current PEM fellows!

Interested fellows should complete the attached application and send to Jennifer Marin @ [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2018 @ 5p EST. We look forward to seeing you all at the PEM/Race in Medicine Special Interest Group next May!

All
If you are a level 1 pediatric trauma center and see about 50,000 pts/year, do you have single or double PEM physician coverage for all shifts? If not, who else do you use - gen pediatricians, Fellows? Sorry to be so specific but we need this for administration support. Thanks

Subject: High Risk Injury/Non-Accidental Trauma Guideline

Good Afternoon Colleagues,

My institution is revising its non-accidental trauma guidelines to ensure that we are properly recognizing children with injuries concerning for inflicted trauma. This will be our first revision after our initial implementation of guidelines a few years ago. There are a number of changes we would like to make to the previous guidelines but we would appreciate any guidance that the PEM community has.

If any of your institutions have non-accidental trauma, child abuse or high-risk injury etc. guidelines that you are willing to share would you please forward them to me at the [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Thank you for your help in advance.
