We have included gastric decompression as part of NYC ALS protocols since 1987.
The reasoning is that swvere gastric distentsion will make ventilation
difficult, if not impossible in infants and young children. We actually wouls
like to introduce this skill at the BLS level. In the new EMT-B curriculum the
skill is included in the optional intubation module.
